1 Step From Saint Peter

A B&B-hostel hybrid, the family-run 1 Step from St. Peter offers eight rooms with shared bathrooms, a communal kitchen and homey vibe. While it’s not the cheapest joint in town, a convenient location, free breakfast and oh-so-friendly service make this spot a great value.

The 1 Step From Saint Peter feels more like a friend’s house than a hostel. Situated on the second floor of a 1920s-era apartment building, it’s got high ceilings, polished original floors, enormous light-filled windows and attractive woodwork. There’s a kitchen and laundry facilities available for guest use, and guests rave about the proprietors and the friendly, personalized service they offer.

The eight rooms vary in size, from small singles to spacious doubles and triples. Décor is of the mix-and-match variety, with “neat and tidy” as the common denominator. All rooms have air conditioning and a safe. Bathrooms are shared but very clean.

In addition to standard guest rooms, the 1 Step from St. Peter offers a seventh-floor apartment for two, complete with a kitchen, private bathroom, computer with free Internet access, and sweeping city views.

The 1 Step from St. Peter's common area has a checkerboard floor, white sofa, big-screen TV and computer terminal with free Internet access. Breakfast is included in the room rate, and complimentary coffee and tea are available throughout the day. Guests can also use the communal fridge in the kitchen.

While “one step” may be a bit hyperbolic, the B&B is nicely located a 15-minute walk from St. Peter’s Basilica and is well positioned for taking public transit.

Wi-Fi is free throughout. Note that you must advise the management of your arrival time and cell number to ensure entry into the hotel (there is no reception area). There is a surcharge for guests arriving after 11 p.m.
