Located in Buda's leafy university quarter near public transportation, the Ábel Panzió Pension is a quiet 1920s-style retreat. After a long day spent in the hustle and bustle of central Pest, check in here for the quiet and the reasonable rates.

The pension’s 10 rooms have lots of homey touches, including framed reproductions of abstract art. Family cottage-style furniture is well made, and desks, night tables and bed frames come in real wood. Doubles and singles on the top floor have slanted ceilings and skylights, giving the rooms a modern feel. In contrast, quarters on the first floor have high ceilings and feel more turn-of-the-last-century. Live plants brighten up most rooms, and all rooms feature air conditioning, minibars and free Internet.

The property's century-old front door—gorgeously restored and covered by vines—leads to a grand front room with an antique bar and a pretty dining room table. Breakfast is served up here each morning. There is also a television for guest us.

Another bonus? The Ábel has a backyard replete with picnic tables.

Note: To get to the Ábel Panzió, take the 61 tram to the Szuret utca stop and walk five minutes.

Situated along the western waters of the Danube, Gellért Hill showcases Budapest's royal and fantastical sides. Its location affords aerial views of Pest, and the famous Gellért Hotel sits along the riverfront, at the foot of the Szabadság Bridge. The hotel's impressive spa, built in Secessionist style with marble columns and colorful mosaics, is a must-see. Across the street, monks from the Pauline Order hold court in their cavernous cathedral. The 'hood is also home to the Citadella, a major tourist draw.

Thankfully, the budget hotels here are on flatter ground, just west of the hills. Circling around the Congress Center, the western side of Gellért is markedly different from the hillside. Its has a more suburban feel, with office buildings and business-class hotels scattered throughout residential neighborhoods.
