South of St. Stephen’s Green, things sober up a bit. The drunk backpackers are fewer and farther between, and Harcourt Street feels awfully sedate and grown-up, even with the preponderance of flashy clubs helmed by doorwomen in tiny skirts. Across Harcourt Street from one of these clubs, the three-star Albany House occupies a big Georgian building.

Inside the Albany House’s 43 guestrooms, furniture tends toward the dark. Rooms are gray with pops of yellow and blue. Many rooms are quite spacious, and those at the back are very quiet. All rooms are equipped with coffee and tea facilities, a television, phone and private bathroom.

The building feels somewhat cobbled together through refurbishment, although there are enough original details, including arched doorways, crown molding and a grand staircase, to allow for charm.

A few words for the wise: The Albany House is a landmark building, which makes the installation of ramps, soundproof windows and elevators impossible. Although the hotel is situated on a quiet street, the rooms in the back of the house might be a more peaceful option.

Rates are quite reasonable and are often considerably cheaper than the rack rate. The included breakfast is Continental: toast, fruit, yogurt, coffee and tea. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.

Verdant St. Stephen’s Green is perhaps the largest, but certainly not the only, park in this quiet (yet central) sliver of Dublin. There's also Merrion Square, where stately Georgian homes and stattuettes of famed residents recall past grandeur, and Iveaugh Gardens with its elegant stone fountains.

Outside of parklands, the streets in this area are residential and quiet, marked by ornate mansions, elementary schools and dog-walking residents. North of the Green, shopping, bars and throngs of people set the stage, and the area to the west of St. Stephen's also has a residential, less touristy feel, with a few pubs thrown in for good measure.
