Hotel Owner Riccardo grew up in the fabulous palazzo which is now home to the Bed and Breakfast Corte Campana. This may explain why this splurge-worthy B&B, located a few corners away from Santa Maria Formosa and Piazza San Marco, feels so much like a real home.
First of all, this B&B has only three rooms. But they’re huge, luxurious, and stately, and decked out in glorious antiques. In keeping with the feels-like-home vibe, rooms are sweetly named “Parent’s Room,” “Sister’s Room,” and “Brother’s Room,” but the only real difference (aside from the unique décor in each room) is that the Parent’s Room offers a queen-sized bed, Sister’s Room a double, and Brother’s Room two twins. Otherwise, each room offers air conditioning, satellite TV and a courtyard view.
The bathrooms aren't super-mod, but they are pristine. All three rooms have private bathrooms, but the bathroom corresponding to the Sister’s Room is located down the hall while the other two rooms have en suite baths.
During high season, Riccardo also rents out two apartments. Located just across the road, these have clean, modern interiors.
The building is over 600 years old—and it shows (in a good way). The living room and breakfast space get great light and are super cozy. Books cover all otherwise unoccupied surfaces, most of which are antique, and everywhere you look there's something older than the United States of America. Funky posters and postcards from happy "house guests" mingle with ornate furniture, gilded mirrors, and a breathtaking chandelier.
Breakfast is included in the room rate.
Value: The Bed and Breakfast Corte Campana is admittedly not a “super-Cheapo” spot. In fact, its starting rates are high for our Editor’s Picks in Venice. However, this is one of those gems that’s worthy of a splurge. And for the rustic comfort and opulent style, the rates are actually a decent value.
As we point out above, the Corte Campana does not offer online booking. To reserve a room, you’ll have to contact the hotel directly by email or telephone (see below).
If you’d like a suggestion for an equally special property that does offer online booking, read our reviews of the sweet and family-run Casa Querini or the lovely Locanda SS. Giovanni e Paolo.

Location: Very central
0.3km to city centerThe largest of the six "sestieri", Castello borders San Marco and becomes more residential (and, we think, interesting) the farther away from the packs of San Marco’s tourists you go. The district is dominated by its naval shipyards, the Arsenale, which were once the largest on the continent (and today has an excellent museum). Other sights include the impressive Basilica di San Giovanni e Paolo, the tranquil Campo Santa Maria Formosa, and the Biennale Gardens. We find the district’s biggest draw, however, to be the tranquility of its narrow streets and hidden courtyards, and the clusters of locals chitchatting on the street and corner bars.
Sleeping in Castello: Hotels in the Castello district are often a better value and a bit more relaxed than those in the dead center of Venice, and this is especially true the farther you get into Castello. Note that most of the picks below are located on the border with San Marco, and thus they’ll be convenient to central sights, although more expensive and busier. However, we think that the charms of Castello really become apparent the deeper you get into the district. Even if you don't sleep deep inside Castello, try to visit it during your stay—you'll be surprised how suddenly you escape the crowds.
Our favorite hotels from the list below include the Al Leon (a lovely splurge), and the Locanda Silva (art-filled and simple), all located near the border with San Marco.
