Let’s get one thing out of the way: The three-star Hotel Beverly Hills bears very little resemblance to its namesake in California. Instead of celebrities lounging by a pool, you might see a middle-aged German couple in the basement sauna. But that is precisely what’s cool about this intimate hotel, located just blocks from bustling Avenue Louise and Place Stephanie—it’s unpretentious and comfortable.

The 28 guest rooms, spread over two buildings, are smallish but pleasant, with wood flooring and freshly painted walls, and cable television. Many rooms also have tiny balconies. The impeccably clean en-suite facilities have been upgraded.

Though situated on a livelier side of Ixelles, with the major thoroughfare of Avenue Toison d’Or merely blocks away, the Hotel Beverly Hills is very quiet, owing to its location on a narrow one-way street.

Breakfast is included in the rate. Wi-Fi is complimentary throughout the hotel.

From the snooty designer stores on Stefania Square to the bustling African neighborhood of Matongé, the Eurocrats in navy suits at the Commission to tiny Japanese noodle restaurants, Ixelles has everything it needs to be a microcosm of all that is Brussels. The neighborhood is divided the lovely Avenue Louise, the "Rodeo Drive" of Brussels, with its boutiques, art galleries and restaurants. During the day, it’s abuzz with traffic, trams and shoppers, but the area becomes much quieter at night.

Plenty of inns and hotels, mostly family-run properties, are tucked in the leafy residential areas, which are well-connected to the city center by public transit. Many offer more personalized service than the budget hotels and chain properties near the Grand Place. Ixelles hotels
