Originally housed within the British Museum, the British Library was established as an independent institution only in 1973. It is the largest library in the world and holds over 150 million items from across the globe.
Just about every media format you can imagine is found in the British Library, including books, newspapers, magazines, sound recordings, patents, drawings and even stamps. Items span 4,000 years, dating back to 2,000 BC.

Hotels near the British Library: Plenty of cheap hostels and B&Bs are located around King’s Cross station, but be aware certain parts of the area can be a bit seedy. For a quieter option, the Bloomsbury neighborhood is itself loaded with literary history (and some affordable hotels).
