Buckingham Palace is the primary residence of the British monarch and a national icon. Originally acquired in 1761 by George III, it became the “official” royal palace in 1837 when Queen Victoria moved in. For tourists who don’t want to invest in a full-day’s tour (or pay the admission price) another option is to stop by to watch the famous changing of the guard.
