Situated in a primo location just a short walk from Piazza San Marco, the cozy Ca’ Del Dose is a real DIY operation. The inn offers a mix of private rooms and apartments, with not much service to speak of. Still, it’s clean, comfortable and affordable, especially for this area.

Each of the Ca' Del Dose's six guest rooms is named for a famous Venetian doge (a former chief magistrate). Décor is standard yet classic, with hardwood floors, Murano glass lamps and wooden headboards carved to resemble St. Mark’s Basilica. Rooms overlook the neighboring rooftops and flower boxes, and some offer a small terrace. All rooms are equipped with air-conditioning and a television.

The private bathrooms are a bit tight, but they are clean and functional. A hairdryer and toiletries are provided.

The Ca’ Del Dose does not have much common space, but rooms are thoughtfully equipped with snacks, coffee, and an electric tea kettle. Reception hours are limited, and guests are asked to communicate their arrival time in advance.

The Ca’ Del Dose also offers a few apartments, located in a separate building a few blocks away. These contain a living room and one to four bedrooms, plus a full kitchen. We prefer staying in the hotel rather than the isolated experience of an apartment. If you have a preference, we'd advise making this clear when booking.

Breakfast is not offered. Wi-Fi is available in the public areas, the rooms and the apartments for free. None of the buildings has an elevator.

Castello

The largest of the six "sestieri", Castello borders San Marco and becomes more residential (and, we think, interesting) the farther away from the packs of San Marco’s tourists you go. The district is dominated by its naval shipyards, the Arsenale, which were once the largest on the continent (and today has an excellent museum). Other sights include the impressive Basilica di San Giovanni e Paolo, the tranquil Campo Santa Maria Formosa, and the Biennale Gardens. We find the district’s biggest draw, however, to be the tranquility of its narrow streets and hidden courtyards, and the clusters of locals chitchatting on the street and corner bars.

Sleeping in Castello: Hotels in the Castello district are often a better value and a bit more relaxed than those in the dead center of Venice, and this is especially true the farther you get into Castello. Note that most of the picks below are located on the border with San Marco, and thus they’ll be convenient to central sights, although more expensive and busier. However, we think that the charms of Castello really become apparent the deeper you get into the district. Even if you don't sleep deep inside Castello, try to visit it during your stay—you'll be surprised how suddenly you escape the crowds.
