Located just a couple minutes away from Central Station and the center of Stockholm, City Backpackers is the perfect place for, well, backpackers. The hostel offers 20 rooms with 51 beds and a large open-air courtyard connecting its two buildings.

The rooms are dorm-like: Bunk beds, reading lamps, and lockers are the standard fare. Some rooms have windows, but quite a few are in the basement (where you'll also find the guest kitchen and TV lounge). The shared bathrooms are cramped, but clean. Most visitors tend to just grab a bed in the dorm, although City Backpacker does offer a 6-bed room available for groups.

The entrance to City Backpackers is actually through City Cafe which, when we were there, was crawling with young twenty-somethings willing to pay the few extra kronors for breakfast.

City Backpacker offers plenty of extras: Bike rentals (the first two hours are free), Swedish language movies shown in the TV lounge every evening at 9:00 PM (with subtitles, of course), free pasta, and guided tours. There’s even a sauna that's free to use during certain hours.

Norrmalm

Busy and hectic, Norrmalm is characterized by the lively Drottninggatan, Stockholm's Central Station, and a veritable slew of cultural facilities. Kulturhuset, St. Jacobs Church, the Royal Opera, Sweden House, and several appealing parks crowd into Norrmalm.

The neighborhood's very modern heart is crowded with all sorts of retail shops, Stockholm's big department stores, and, to the south on a detached island, the national Parliament. While tourists are an unavoidable part of the Norrmalm picture, the vast majority of the crowds surrounding you here are residents. Norrmalm is the beating heart of today's Stockholm.
