Cheap hotels near Duomo in Florence, Italy
Florence’s Duomo is perhaps the most recognized and famous landmark in the city. The cathedral, whose proper name is the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, sits smack-dab in the middle of Florence’s Old Center.
The Duomo, a UNESCO World Heritage site, serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese in Florence. Brunelleschi designed the dome, which was the first of its kind when it was completed in 1436. Construction on the Gothic cathedral was begun in 1296.
Be sure to take in the substantial Bronze doors when you enter. Then take time to gaze at all the restored murals, paintings and vibrant stained glass. Brunelleschi is buried in the crypt underneath. For opening times and ticket prices, visit the Duomo's Web site.
