Home in Lisbon sits along the western edge of Baixa at the beginning of Sâo Nicolau. The hostel offers bunks and a party for under €20 a night. It's got an upbeat atmosphere and is close to all of central Lisbon and just down the mountain from the castle.
Situated on two floors of an old apartment building, Home in Lisbon still exudes the warmth of residential living. The hostel's 60 beds are located in what were obviously living rooms, bedrooms and other common areas. Dorm rooms sleep four or six. The wooden floors are original, as are the large French doors that open to small terraces. All bedrooms and bathrooms are mixed gender.
Not interested in sharing a room with strangers? Not a problem — Home in Lisbon has some attractive private double rooms, some of which also have terraces.
A sun-drenched lounge on the second floor provides brightly colored sofas and tables, and free Internet stations. Home in Lisbon's hipster communal kitchen functions as another hangout zone, replete with smoking terrace.
Mamma, the hostel's owner, preps a delicious dinner and dessert for guests, and the hostel organizes guided tours. What else? Oh right—the hostel pours free shots at 11 p.m., six nights a week, right before a midnight pub crawl.
A continental breakfast is included in the room rate. Home in Lisbon provides a free laundry service twice a day and free Wi-Fi is offered throughout the hostel.

0.7km to city centerThe grid-shaped Baixa neighborhood was completely rebuilt following Lisbon’s devastating 1755 earthquake. Today the area functions as the city's chief shopping area, offering everything from boutiques to tourist traps. Two large streets, rua Augusta and rua de Santa Justa, are pedestrian-only thoroughfares.
Baixa is an easy jumping-off point for seeing the rest of the city. Praça Rossio, sitting at the top of Baixa, is the city's most active square. At the base of Baixa is the Praça do Comércio, a square of wide arcades adjacent to the river.
