Fashion House (Doubles: €50 - €80)

This beauty gets our numero uno slot for price, quiet-yet-central location and friendly owners. Its eight tastefully decorated guest rooms offer basic amenities and share bathrooms. We love the oasis of a patio, a rarity in Barcelona. And the quiet Eixample neighborhood is removed from the tourist chaos but near Plaça Catalunya and the Sagrada Familia. 

Hosteria Grau (Doubles: €85 - €130)

This two-star gem is central, simple and cozy, with a fascinating history. Most of its 19 cute guest rooms have private bathrooms while the cheapest share facilities. The Hosteria Grau is located on the safe (and cool) outer edge of El Raval, a former slum that can still be dicey in places. The contemporary art museum and a branch of the University add to the artst locale. 

Best Super Cheapo

Pension Mari-Luz (Doubles: €30 - €70)

Deep in the Gothic Quarter, with easy access to popular sights like La Boqueria Market, the Mari-Luz is all heart. It doesn't have an elevator, but its friendly owners, historic building and surrounding cobblestoned streets balance out the trouble of lugging your suitcase up the stairs. Almost all of the 13 spare guest rooms have a balcony, and most share bathrooms.

Eddy Rooms (Doubles:  €44 - €75)

Housed in a gorgeous historic building and run by a friendly German pair, the Eddy Rooms is a fun and funky guesthouse with elaborate décor, sun-drenched common spaces and oodles of personality. There are some quirks, but the 13 guest rooms (doubles have private baths and singles share) are comfortable, clean, and deliciously cheap—meaning you'll have extra euros to spend in the fashion-friendly Eixample 'hood.

We heart the Itaca Hostel's cool Gothic Quarter location. 

Best Location

Itaca Hostel (Doubles: €60 - €70)

This youth hostel boasts a superb location on a tranquil side-street in Barri Gotic. It’s one of the “homiest” hostels in Barcelona, with dedicated staff, free tea, a guest kitchen and ample chill-out space. Both dorms and privates are simple and colorful, and all share bathrooms. The Cathedral, great shopping and one of the best tapas joints in Barcelona are all nearby. 

Hostal Goya (Doubles: €60 - €110)

Ambiance and good taste get points with us, and the two-star Hostal Goya has both, plus a central Eixample location. Its 19 guest rooms mesh classic and modern style to gorgeous effect, and each has a private bathroom (but no TV). The residential neighborhood is quiet but convenient, and some great cheap eats can be found on Sant Pere Street, not far away. 

HelloBCN. (Doubles: €60 - €100)

Set off the tourist track in Poble Sec, the HelloBCN is a backpacker’s oasis. While we'd emphasize the "youth" in youth hostel here, the place offers everything a young traveler might want or need, incuding a snazzy lounge/bar area, bike rentals and organized activities. Each private double has its own bathroom. The up-and-coming area still has a cool and is home to the Apolo concert hall .

Best Budget Style

Park Hotel (Doubles: €80 - €160) 

Situated in La Ribera, the splurge-worthy three-star Park Hotel offers close proximity to Parc Ciutadella, the beach, Picasso Museum and excellent boutique shopping. It sports a fresh and fun vibe and offers 91 well-equipped rooms and a 1950s-style café. The building is remarkable for its post-war style, complete with a psychedelic staircase that still attracts architecture fans.  

Astoria Hotel. (Doubles: €60 - €190)

The three-star Astoria Hotel can get a bit spendy, its luxurious extras (like a fitness center and rooftop pool) make it a good value. The hotel's 114 guest rooms are modern, elegant and feature all the modern amenities. Several of the city's most important Gaudí buildings are nearby.

Hostal Gat Xino (Doubles: €60 - €140)

What do you get when a group of architects collaborate? A first-rate hostal with avant-garde style, 35 funky-fresh guest rooms (with spiffy private baths) and a fabulous rooftop lounge. The El Raval neighborhood can be shabby in places and happening in others, but the Gat Xino is near enough to Las Ramblas and other sights.
