Fitzgerald Hotel Union Square

The two-star Fitzgerald Hotel is the sophisticated big sister to nearby EuroCheapo pick, the Adelaide Hostel. It has the same central location, just a few blocks from Union Square, but it’s been spruced up with a lovely, old world motif.

The hotel’s 46 guestrooms are stylish and modern. There’s a lot of color happening here, but it works. Walls are painted mint green, warm gold or rich rose. Headboards are patterned and bedding is tapestry. Framed prints and stonework mirrors hang on the walls, lit by large wrought iron chandeliers. All rooms are equipped with coffee and tea facilities, a fan, television and phone.

The private bathrooms sparkle and are outfitted with toiletries and a hair dryer.

Opened 1910, the hotel was refurbished in 2003 but retains some of the quaint details of the historic building, including the tiny but adorable elevator and some cute hallway nooks that are furnished with chairs and plush pillows.

The ground-floor wine bar, The Hidden Vine, is a swanky spot with jazzy paintings, a fireplace and an extensive wine list. Breakfast, included in the room rate, is served in a downstairs breakfast room that also hosts an open mic night in conjunction with the Adelaide Hostel. Wi-Fi is free throughout, and there is also a free Internet station in the lobby.

The Fitzgerald’s central location places it just two blocks from Union Square, a few blocks down the hill from Nob Hill and very close to the theater distric. Do note, though, that this is the edge of the less savory Tenderloin District, so keep your wits about you, especially when returning at night.
