U-Bahn, Bus & Tram
The public transportation system of Vienna includes an elaborate system made up of metros, trams and buses. The U-Bahn is the underground train and the S-Bahn is the suburban train. Pick up a free map at the tourist office to sort yourself out.
On trams, be sure to open doors using latches or pushing buttons. If you do not open the door on your own, it will not open and you will miss your stop. Plus you'll look like a hapless tourist. To this, you'll likely say "nein, danke!"

Tickets
Buses, trams and the metro all use the same tickets. Buy tickets from Tabak shops, station machines or Vorverkauf offices in the station. Single tickets for metro and bus journeys cost €1.70. Single tram tickets cost €2.20. Single tickets are valid for one ride, including transfers. A 24-hour Netzkarte costs €5.70 and a 72-hour Netzkarte will run you €13.60.
The Wien-Karte, or Vienna Card, costs €18.50. It includes a 72-hour travel pass and allows for minor discounts at local attractions. An 9-day card costs €27.20 and can be used for several people traveling together.
Be sure to stamp your ticket upon first use. Multiple-use passes need only be stamped once. A fine of €62 awaits those caught cheating the system.
Children under the age of 15 travel for free on Sundays and holidays and children under age six travel free at all times.
