Getting Into Vienna

Getting Into Vienna - Vienna, Austria

Flughafen Wien-Schwechat, Vienna's airport, is located 20km (about 12 miles) southeast of the city. More information regarding the airport itself can be found at Schwechat's official website.

The City Airport Train (CAT) is the newest (and shiniest) Vienna airport link. A CAT link between Schwechat and the Wien-Mitte train station costs €9 one-way and €16 round trip. The trip takes 16 minutes. Trains run twice and hour from 5:30 AM to 11:30 PM Additionally, some airlines permit luggage check-in at the CAT station. Check CAT online to see if your airline will allow you to check in for your flight at the train station.

Our favorite mode of transportation is a little bit slower. The airport is also connected to the city center via the S-Bahn. Trains run every 30 minutes from 5 AM to 10 PM. The trip takes 30 minutes. Tickets start at €3. The S7 line runs to Wien-Mitte station.

Additionally, buses run to the City Air Terminal next to Wien-Mitte station. Buses run every 20 minutes between 6 AM and 12:20 AM. The journey takes 20 minutes. The price is €6 (€11 round trip). There are also hourly buses to the Südbahnhof and Westbahnhof. For more information, visit Vienna's Post Bus site

Taxis to the city center cost between €30 and €40.

Arriving by Train

Vienna has three train stations: the Westbannhof, the Südbahnhof, and the Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof.

Trains from the west and Hungary terminate at the Westbahnhof, five U-Bahn stops from the city center.

Trains coming from Eastern Europe, Italy, and the Balkans arrive at the Südbahnhof. The Südbahnhof is located south of the city center. It is serviced by U-Bahn lines stopping at Südtiroler Platz U-Bahn station as well as tram line D.

All trains from lower Austria and some trains from Prague terminate at Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof. This train station sits north of the city center on the tram line D.
