The A La Grand Cloche is a long-time cheapo favorite for its value and location, right smack in the center of Brussels. In 2018, new owners took over, and the hotel has a whole new look. Still, the 42-room property remains a good value, just a short walk to both public transport and major sightseeing attractions.

Guest rooms are very clean and decorated in an industrial-chic, minimalist style, with all the amenities you'd expect, including Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and air conditioning. The bathrooms have brightly colored tiles and continue the more minimalist feel. Some rooms have views of Rouppe Square, and you may even be lucky enough to score a balcony. If you prefer as much quiet as possible, the rear rooms are your best bet.

The Grand Cloche is housed in an 1840 building reminiscent of a Southern European resort hotel. Its stately exterior goes well with the tree-lined Place Rouppe on which it sits, merely blocks south of the Grand Place. Inside, though, it's very modern.

On the ground floor, you can check out Klok, the hotel restaurant, which offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Breakfast is available for €17, while Cheapos can save at lunch with the a la carte plates, priced at €3 to €45 each. For dinner, rates range from €60 and €95, with drinks.

Grote Markt, Grand Place, or whatever you want to call it, this impressive square facing the medieval Town Hall (built in 1402), is the undisputed tourist epicenter of Brussels. The surrounding neighborhood—sprinkled with hotels, cutesy cafés, restaurants and chocolate shops—draws throngs of shutter-happy tourists day after day.

A maze of cobblestoned alleys radiating from the square leads to the opera house, a commercial drag or the gay district, depending on which turn you take. Ornate guild houses, sidewalk cafés and souvenir shops crowd the neighborhood, making it a lively place around the clock.
