Adriano's style and rates are hard to beat. In a building stacked with hostals in the Huertas district, this stealthily-attractive option sits, just waiting to be discovered. There's an aesthetic triumph to be found in every boutique-like room, each of which executes its own design imperative following the fantastical whims of Adriano's Argentinean owner.

Hallways are bright and sunny with glass chandeliers, antique chairs, and original Madrileño modern art. We especially liked the decorative molding in each room. Beds are draped with sheer fabric, gilded vintage mirrors reflect shrouded walls, and new bedding looks like it was purchased yesterday from a mid-range suburban furniture store. The black-and-white room's bathroom amusingly features cow tiles.

The best room, however, is the Maria Callas Room. Signed black-and-white Callas concert bills are hung on walls covered with scores of music.

Huertas or Santa Ana? The neighborhood itself doesn't seem to know. But whatever its name, one thing's certain: This tiny but central stretch of the city just south of Puerta del Sol is jam-packed with people, attractions and excitement. Although digs in this popular 'hood can sometimes fall on the pricier end, there are deals to be had for travelers who crave a lively bar scene.

Also known as Barrio de las Letras (or "Neighborhood of the Letters"), it was a hot spot for literary gents of Madrid's Golden Age, and remnants of 16th- and 17th-century literary life still abound near Plaza Santa Ana. There's the Ateno, the Mueseo Cervantino, where the first edition of Don Quixote was printed, and myriad theaters and bars.
