Hostal Barrera

Along Calle Atocha and within walking distance to the Museum Triangle and Atocha station is the attractive two-star Hostal Barrera. The hostal is in a renovated 1933 building, and the physical integrity of this building is central to its appeal. In the renovation process, original steel supports were recovered and meticulously restored; most rooms boast at least one.

Rooms are sweet and spacious with lots of light. Headboards, desks, and bedside tables do not match; their discordant pairings add character to each of the 14 exterior rooms. Quilts and bedspreads feature floral designs that remind us of staying in a cottage.

Walls painted in soft tones or sunny yellow set the mood. Our favorite was room No. 214 for its big space and degree of tranquility. Unfortunately, there are no balconies to up the ante.

Double-paned windows block street noise. Windows and mirrors are super-sized in all the rooms, and French glass doors lead to the private bathrooms.

The staff is English speaking and polite. They'll arrange anything you need, including airport shuttle service, or simply a cold drink from the mini-fridge at reception.
