Hostal Central Barcelona

Situated in the quiet, residential area known as Right Eixample (but still just a few blocks from one of downtown’s main transportation hubs, Urquinaona Square), the two-star Hostal Central offers a cozy escape from the downtown tourist crush, while still providing easy access to all sights.

The Hostal Central’s 13 rooms reside in a “Modernista” building that dates back to 1901. Light and bright, the rooms, along with the rest of the hostal, feature a cream-and-white color palette. The rooms themselves are not huge, but they are tidy. Many have balconies looking out onto the street—which is a busy one!

Thankfully, all rooms have soundproof windows and air conditioning to keep things on the quiet side. Since the building was originally a home, bathrooms were an afterthought, added to guest rooms that were once a family room or someone’s bedroom. They are large and have all “the bits” (shower, toilet, sink, towels...), but they resemble enormous glass boxes. Aesthetically, we didn’t adore them, but they serve their purpose and are spotless.

All but three rooms have private facilities. The others share one tiny bathroom. It’s grime-free but cramped. Shower gel is provided and a hairdryer is available.

Other perks? Guests at Hostal Central may use the microwave and fridge, which can save big euros in the food department. There is also a comfy lounge area, where guests will find a television and free coffee and tea. Wi-Fi access is free throughout, and the owner, Monica, also has an Internet station in her office that guests can use (whenever she is there).

Although the hostal does not offer breakfast, no matter, it’s a cinch to walk across the street and grab a coffee and croissant at a neighborhood café. Note that the Central does not have 24-hour reception, and front desk assistance depends on when guests are checking in and out. All guests have their own set of keys, though, so this won’t be an issue for those who plan to stay out late enjoying Barcelona’s nightlife. Also, note that guests are required to pay for rooms up front.

Location

We dig the Hostal Central’s quiet location. It’s surrounded by “local” bars, providing the double bonus of getting an authentic Barcelona experience without the usual tourist prices for meals, coffees and shopping. The Central is located in an Asian neighborhood (a sort of Chinatown), which means there aren’t a ton of Spanish eateries on the block. We suggest trying Can Vador across the street, which serves typical Spanish and Catalan dishes and offers a three-course menu del día for just €22.
