Hostal Gonzalo

Down a street straight out of early 17th-century literature, past fruit bodegas, travel bookshops, antiqued taverns, and the house where Miguel de Cervantes lived and died, you'll find the charming Hostal Gonzalo. It won't disappoint for location or amenities, like free Wi-Fi and air conditioning. Even better, its low rates never fluctuate, even during high season.

Charming Calle Cervantes aside, Gonzalo benefits from an outstanding location. The hostal is located near the Museum Triangle, which is comprised of Reina Sofia, El Prado, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza art museums. That makes it easy to make a quick museum visit if you're train-bound the next morning. Atocha train station is also within walking distance.

Of the 15 rooms, all are exterior. In contrast to most family-run hostals, bedding is attractively bright and crisp. Solo travelers note that the hostal's body pillows also keep good company.

The owners haven't bothered decorating walls with art or generic paintings. There are new windows, as well. Along with air conditioning, there is a fan and a great cross breeze, and French doors swing open to the quiet street below with limited traffic.

Our advice: Book ahead. These rooms fill up quickly.
