Deep in the heart of Madrid beats the Hostal La Macarena. This cozy, tastefully decorated two-star is the perfect place for those who don't want to travel very far from their room to be near the action: It's located directly across from the popular Plaza Mayor. You also won't have to go very far to find Spanish fare: La Macarena is surrounded by tapas bars and traditional restaurants. With free Wi-Fi, private bathrooms, and satellite TV in each room, this is not your usual hostal!

Most of the Macarena's 25 comfortable, intimate rooms have wrought iron balconies facing the beautiful, windy medieval streets of Madrid's center. (Only five face the interior.)

The bathrooms are clean—they're cleaned every day—and come with soap and even full-sized bathtubs. (You may be tempted to balk at our enthusiasm, but complimentary soap and lounge-worthy tubs are unusual in small, family-run Madrid hostals. Trust us.)

The friendly staff at the front desk will help with anything you want, even in English.

Huertas or Santa Ana? The neighborhood itself doesn't seem to know. But whatever its name, one thing's certain: This tiny but central stretch of the city just south of Puerta del Sol is jam-packed with people, attractions and excitement. Although digs in this popular 'hood can sometimes fall on the pricier end, there are deals to be had for travelers who crave a lively bar scene.

Also known as Barrio de las Letras (or "Neighborhood of the Letters"), it was a hot spot for literary gents of Madrid's Golden Age, and remnants of 16th- and 17th-century literary life still abound near Plaza Santa Ana. There's the Ateno, the Mueseo Cervantino, where the first edition of Don Quixote was printed, and myriad theaters and bars.
