Sure, the reception area of the Hostal Riesco reminds you of Sigmund Freud's office, but you shouldn't dismiss this place just yet ... Super cheap and located directly on Puerta del Sol, the Riesco provides a nice, air-conditioned stay near the heart of Madrid.

A father-daughter team mans the reception area, which is decorated with leather sofas, Persian rugs, an art deco radio, and a ceramic of a German shepherd (think canine, not lederhosen). Little English is spoken, but this family-run place is friendly and courteous.

All rooms have beautiful hardwood floors and balconies that face either Puerta del Sol or the side street Calle Correo. Pretty fabrics adorn beds and windows, and attractive carved wooden furniture is in perfect condition. It's obvious that the owners have put time and thought into the decor and the furnishings.

Most rooms have full bathrooms (all of which have weird, kitschy accordion doors). Recent upgrades have added perks like TVs and Wi-Fi to the rooms.

Puerta del Sol

The Puerta del Sol is the geographic and historic center of old Madrid. Located within walking distance of most of central Madrid's tourist offerings, it's an obligatory stop for all visitors to Madrid. Calle Mayor, a major commercial and business street, runs to the west of Puerta del Sol, and from the south branch a gaggle of tiny, dense streets packed with tapas bars, restaurants and cafés. Many of Madrid's best hotels are on the Puerta del Sol, while pensions can be found along the side streets.
