Picture the friendly family that runs the two-star Hostal Santillan. Now picture them again. And again and again ... There are dozens of family photos from across the decades lining the lobby's halls and walls. It will certainly make you feel right at home!

The Santillan is housed in a beautiful 1920s apartment building, boasting an impressive marble, mosaic and stained-glass entrance hall. (We couldn't help snapping a few photos of the entrance for our own scrapbook.) Rooms are nestled eight floors above, and are perfectly acceptable and simply decorated.

All rooms have have private bathrooms. No air-conditioning or telephones here. Fans are available in double rooms.

The Gran Vía, Madrid's main boulevard, stretches majestically from the Plaza de España and encompasses the Puerta del Sol. The Gran Vía is like no other avenue in Madrid. It's a truly grand boulevard populated by cinemas, shopping, theaters and impressive art-nouveau buildings. Accommodations here can from for the very pricey (three-, four- and five-star hotels) to the comfortably cheapo (one-star pensions).
