Even though it’s located at the intersection of two bustling pedestrian streets, this cozy property feels like a snug Catalan cabin set in a quiet forest (complete with a rustic lounge and fireplace). This island of tranquility offers cute and clean two-star rooms and incredibly helpful service at reasonable rates.

First, here's a bit of history. Back in 1862, the Grau family ancestors opened an unnamed bar in the beautiful building that now houses the hotel. In the early 20th-century, the establishment was named “Bar Centric” and became a popular meeting place for the local Bohemian set and is rumored to have housed a basement hideout during the Spanish Civil War.

The Grau family opened the hotel in 1941 and runs it in typical Catalan tradition to this day. The contemporary art museum CCCB is a couple of blocks from the hotel, as is Plaça Catalunya, the city’s main hub. And the branch of the University located near the Grau gives this zone a young, cool vibe.

Offering 19 single, double and triple rooms with private bathrooms, the hotel has options for everyone. Expect decor accents like wood-beamed ceilings, wicker chairs, colorful accent walls and an array of framed artwork. Furniture ranges from modern and boxy to whimsical and shabby-chic in style. Homey quilts round out the scene. Rooms don’t have a TV or telephone, but they do have air conditioning, a safe, minibar and eco-friendly touches. Some rooms have darling balconies that look onto the always entertaining Carrer Ramelleres (ask ahead). Interior rooms are quieter but also much darker. There are also six apartments (three with kitchens) available in the same building and great for groups, families and extended stays.

The hotel’s communal lounge-loft has an Internet station and overlooks the street. It’s a comfy place to read a book beside a huge stone fireplace. It has a rustic feel, with rich woods, wrought iron railings and comfy red sofas. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

Another plus: Although historic, the building benefits from a recently added elevator!

Intriguing, densely populated (but less heavily touristed) El Raval is located to the west of La Rambla. An outskirt and slum for much of its existence (its name comes from arrabal, which means "suburb" or "slum"), El Raval long bore the nickname Barrio Chino. The circus performers, gypsies and prostitutes who once lived here are immortalized on some of Picasso's most famous works from his Blue Period.

Today, the area has largely cleaned up its act, but it still maintains its rough-and-tumble edge and diverse population. And it's home to some of the most interesting spots in the city, including open-air markets, legit old eateries and trendy new bars and cafés. Also here are major cultural institutions like the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA and the Centre de Cultura Contemporània (CCCB), as well as the Maritime Museum and the medieval Hospital de la Santa Creu.
