The central Hotel Al Vagon offers one-star rooms on the border of Cannaregio and San Marco, within walking distance of most city sights.

The friendly Hotel Al Vagon has a lot going for it, including a convenient Cannaregio location and congenial owners. Recent upgrades to the property have resulted in nicer rooms with slick bathrooms.

Typical for Venice, the hotel resides in a centuries-old palazzo, this one dating to the 15th century. Still, its 24 guest rooms offer modern comforts, including air conditioning, a safe, satellite TV and a phone, and Wi-Fi works throughout.

Venetian flair dominates the look throughout, with brocade curtains, antique furnishings and some impressive four-poster beds. ”Classic” rooms are on the smaller side, but some overlook the canal (and are slightly more expensive). “Superior” rooms seemed to have a bit more flash and gold, are more spacious and have some of the best canal views in the house. The upgrade, however, will cost you another €20-30.

The bathrooms, all private, vary in size. All have a shower, hair dryer, and basic toiletries.

Note that there isn’t an elevator and the hotel’s stairs are fairly steep. Breakfast is not available either, but many cafés in the area make it easy to grab a bite. And pet lovers should note that furry friends sleep free.

Situated north and east of the train station, Cannaregio is the first neighborhood that tourists experience when arriving by train. You descend the steps from the station, Grand Canal in front of you, and hang a left, following the swarm of tourists that snakes through the neighborhood, spiraling around toward San Marco.

While many tourists think of Cannaregio as a neighborhood to “get through” on the way to San Marco’s gold, it offers its own charms, including the Jewish Ghetto, a list of fabulous churches, and some of Venice’s finest palaces, among them the breathtaking Ca d’ Oro, whose original façade once gleamed in solid gold.

Sleeping in Cannaregio: For budget travelers, Cannaregio makes a very practical home base, as it offers not only quick access to the train station, but some of the city’s cheapest hotels and restaurants. While many of these sleeps and eats are also pretty forgettable, there are some real gems among the lot. Our favorite hotels in the neighborhood include the Hotel Villa Rosa and Hotel Santa Lucia (both very close to the station), and the Hotel Bernardi Semenzato, closer to where Cannaregio meets San Marco.
