Located just north of pedestrian street Drakou in the extremely pleasing residential neighborhood of Koukaki, Art Gallery Hotel is a great option for travelers seeking a quiet inn just off the tourist path.

Built in the 1940s as a huge family home, Art Gallery Hotel became a hotel in 1982. Run by the utterly fabulous and deeply friendly Ada, it's the sort of hotel we jump up and down about. Ada, an artist, once used the fifth floor as her studio, and original artwork is strewn throughout the hotel.

Art Gallery's 21 rooms are not the most polished or most amenity-filled in Athens, but they sure are comfy. Modern furniture contrasts with some older antique pieces. We especially liked the hardwood floors and the antique-style furniture and funky light fixtures in some of the bedrooms. All rooms have air conditioning, televisions, private telephones, and mini-bars.

The fourth-floor breakfast room (and bar) is relaxed and chilled out. The adjacent veranda—where you can breakfast on warm days—offers great views of the Acropolis.

Breakfast is available for an additional €9. Free wireless Internet is available.

Quiet Koukaki,to the south of Filopappou Hill, is a residential neighborhood of hillside avenues. Drakou, a leafy pedestrian street Drakou lined with eateries, Internet cafés and gelaterias, forms the neighborhood's core. The closest metro station is Syngrou-Fix.

Makriyianni, the adjacent neighborhood, is situated right at the foot of the Acropolis. It’s a more touristy area than Koukaki—with shops bulging with tschochkes and restaurants groaning with tourists—but the pedestrian street Dionysiou Areopagitou is pretty charming in places. Akropoli is the metro station closest to Makriyianni.
