The three-star Hotel Azzi is housed in a former monastery on a quiet street in the city center. And that's only the beginning of the heavenly features at this budget-friendly abode.

The Azzi’s 18 spacious rooms are large and simply decorated. There are some shabby-chic touches and original antique furnishings. Air conditioning, television and free Wi-Fi are available in all rooms, and some rooms have balconies (ask ahead). En suite bathrooms are surprisingly large.

The Azzi is nicknamed Locanda degli Artisti (meaning “Artist’s Lodge”) for a good reason. Its hallways and common spaces feature a myriad artistic touches, including temporary modern art expositions.

The extensive reception and lounge area is likewise, ahem, art-filled, and features usable musical instruments, including a piano and an acoustic guitar (small concerts sometimes take place here). The comfy upstairs lounge leads out to a sunny terrace.

Downstairs is a cozy wine cellar and coffee bar with arched ceilings and long wooden tables. A buffet breakfast is included in the rate and features cappuccino and hot chocolate. There is no elevator.

Location: Very central

1.1km to city center

Just northeast of the train station sits one of Florence's most colorful neighborhoods. San Lorenzo is home to much of the city's foreign-born population, many of whom man the stands at the bustling local market. The area is the cheapest place to shop and snack in the center of the city.

Peruse the stands wisely for real leather bags and accessories, and be on the lookout for fakes. The streets around the market are home to kebab stands and Asian markets galore, as well as cheap clothing and shoe shops. (Read our guide to shopping in the city's markets.)

Choosing a hotel in San Lorenzo is a great option, especially for budget travelers, as cheapo options abound. (Seriously, there are apartment buildings that house independent family-run pensions on each floor!) The quick proximity to Florence's train station make it convenient, and the neighborhood's local flavor makes it more interesting (and less touristy) than more central 'hoods.
