The Economy Hotel is an attractive, 56-room budget property located roughly between the Omonia and Monastiraki metro stations. It's adjacent to Athens' remarkable Central Market, tucked away on a quiet street just behind the city's Old Town Hall. A mini-Chinatown is nearby as well.

The Economy's rooms, which scream "tourist class," are on the bland side. We saw wood floors, beds with heavy comforters, nondescript headboards, and minimal furnishings. All this is not to detract from the fact that rooms are air-conditioned, clean and in good, renovated shape. They have modern amenities like televisions and mini-fridges. What they lack is a funky edge, novel or otherwise, to give them a bit more character.

The lovely Athens tradition that installs extraordinary lounge areas in average hotels is happily in effect at Economy. The mezzanine lounge, which doubles as the breakfast room, is to die for. Think marble floors, light leather couches, a flat-panel television, and a modest view over the square below.

Breakfast is included. Wired internet in public areas is free of charge. Wi-Fi is available in the entire hotel for free.

A gritty transit and commercial hub, Omonia Square is not Athens at its most quaint and ancient. In architectural terms, it is is other than charming. But there are plenty of quirky, even inspiring, aspects of the area around Omonia Square. For one, oodles of ethnic restaurants and immigrant retail shops give the area a bit of an international vibe.

There's also the mindblowing Central Market, featuring stall upon stall of interesting goods. While Omonia is convenient for cheap sleeps and international fare, keep in mind the area can get a bit sketchy at night.
