The one-star Hotel Giappone is a small, quiet property perched above a busy shopping street between the train station and Duomo. A friendly, no-frills spot, it’s a good pick for those looking for a great value—and willing to make the arduous climb up the four-floor spiral staircase.

The Giappone’s eight rooms sport colorful walls with bedding to match. Their furnishings are simple and sturdy, and most rooms have desks facing tall windows, for ample viewing of the surrounding rooftops and the shoppers below. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, television and free Wi-Fi.

Some rooms have private bathrooms, while other (cheaper) rooms have sinks and showers, but share a toilet down the hall. Those traveling with family and friends should note that corner in-room facilities are not cordoned off (and shower doors are clear glass).

The building itself is historic and beautiful, and an outdoor landing at the hotel’s fourth-floor entrance is a great place to catch your breath after the long trek upstairs.

You can't miss Brunelleschi's magnificent dome atop the rosy marble Cathedral. It's the obvious central meeting point and tourist hub of the city. Here, you're in the vicinity of practically everything: the Uffizi Museums, Palazzo della Signoria, the San Lorenzo Market and the Accademia.

The streets surrounding the Duomo cater to visitors, with generic, all-day dining (for a price) and exclusive shopping. The big guns in Italian fashion are located along Via Tornabuoni (technically closer to Santa Maria Novella), with several others on Via Calzaiuoli, Via del Corso. Borgo Albizi, which starts behind the Duomo is more of a boutique street, featuring handmade, original designs in clothing and accessories.

Sleeping in a hotel near the Duomo makes practical sense, as this is the center of Florence, making it simple to pop back to your hotel room at a moment's notice. Fortunately, several of our favorite budget hotels in the city are located in this neighborhood—some are surprisingly affordable given their location.
