Quick Read

Situated along the chic Herengracht, a quick stroll from Dam Square and in the heart of Amsterdam, the quiet and friendly Hotel Hegra, now part of the Stanley Hotels chain, offers comfortable three-star rooms with rates that stay very reasonable year-round.

While the exterior stays true to its 17th century canal house origins, the interior, including the reception area, stairways, hallways and rooms, are in great shape.

Each of the Hegra’s nine renovated rooms are simply decorated with prints of Old Amsterdam hanging on white walls, hardwood floors, and double or twin beds. (A family room that sleeps four is also available.) All are equipped with a flat-screen TV and Wi-Fi, and four boast views out to the Herengracht canal.

All accommodations come with modern, private bathrooms featuring a shower and hairdryer.

Downstairs, a continental breakfast, which includes baked croissants, fresh juices and top-shelf coffee, is served for an additional fee. If you're lucky, you'll also get to say hello to Hotelo, the Hegra's official feline assistant.

Note: The Hegra, like most of the hotels on our list, does not have an elevator.

Grachtengordel West, also called the "Western Canal Ring," is an expansive area in the center of town, near Dam Square and the Old Center. The neighborhood is home to gorgeous 17th-century canal houses, along with some of the city's most interesting sights, including the Westermarkt, the Homomonument, the Westerkerk (Amsterdam's grandest church and the final resting place of Rembrandt) and Anne Frank's House.

Sleeping in the Western Canal Ring is, in our opinion, a breeze, as it's a quick stroll (or an even quicker tram ride), to the train station and most of the city's main tourist attractions. It's also quite lovely and romantic, lined with canals, floating houseboats, and, generally speaking, not popular with roving stag parties.
