Conveniently placed adjacent to Dublin’s bus terminal, the recently re-christened Beresford Hotel (it had been the Hotel Isaacs Dublin) is an easy pick for its location as well as its solid rooms and relatively reasonable rates. This three-star hotel’s 103 rooms are a cut above the rooms found in most of Dublin’s budget-friendly properties.

Rooms at the Beresford come in two varieties. There’s the modern business-class type, with its very familiar crisp duvets dressed with ruby-red throws and round table of blond wood surrounded by matching chairs. A working space is crowded with a desk lamp, telephone, electric kettle and coffee and tea supplies. You’ve seen it before. Its very familiarity is more comforting than sexy.

Then there are the Georgian rooms, available upon request. They’re fancy, with overstuffed chairs, ottomans, dainty bedside lampshades. The model we saw was massive, and surely at the top end of the hotel’s rate scale. All rooms are equipped with a television, and air conditioning is available (request ahead).

With the new name and new management came a welcome change—Wi-Fi is now free throughout the hotel. Parking, though, still costs €12.50 per day.

Breakfast is sometimes included in the room rate (check when booking).

Starting just above the Liffey, Gardiner Street shoots north from the Custom House, a behemoth of an 18th-century building located near Butt Bridge and across the water from Trinity College. It eventually becomes residential (and a little run-down), but the lower portion is populated almost entirely by hotels and B&Bs. Although not particularly scenic, Gardiner Street Lower offers proximity to the Henry Street and O’Connell Street shopping areas and to Dublin's main train stations.
