The two-star Kristal Hotel is located inside a charming, grand old house in the quiet Buda neighborhood of Gellért-Hegy, a quick ten-minute walk from the city center. It's a wonderful place for those looking for a respite from central Pest.

The Kristal feels like a home-away-from-1970s-home. Eighteen rooms have furnishings with all the drama of a dated soap opera, including chiffon robes in spotted leopard-like patterns, humdrum floral bedspreads and somber beige and brown curtains and carpets. Large windows and outdoor terraces perk things back up. Five rooms feature private balconies, which are impressively ample. The balcony off of one double room we visited was larger than the room itself. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, television, mini-fridge and free Wi-Fi.

Despite their valiant marketing efforts, the Kristal is definitely off the beaten hotel path.

Gellert-Hegy

Situated along the western waters of the Danube, Gellért Hill showcases Budapest's royal and fantastical sides. Its location affords aerial views of Pest, and the famous Gellért Hotel sits along the riverfront, at the foot of the Szabadság Bridge. The hotel's impressive spa, built in Secessionist style with marble columns and colorful mosaics, is a must-see. Across the street, monks from the Pauline Order hold court in their cavernous cathedral. The 'hood is also home to the Citadella, a major tourist draw.

Thankfully, the budget hotels here are on flatter ground, just west of the hills. Circling around the Congress Center, the western side of Gellért is markedly different from the hillside. Its has a more suburban feel, with office buildings and business-class hotels scattered throughout residential neighborhoods.
