Locanda Al Leon

Friendly owners Giuliano and Marcella run the charming Locanda Al Leon, a pristine guesthouse overlooking a small square just minutes from Piazza San Marco. Perks abound from large bathrooms and free Wi-Fi to air conditioning and renovated rooms.

Walking into the Al Leon’s wood-beamed and stone lobby, you won’t be surprised to learn that you’ve just stepped inside a 15th-century building (with Wi-Fi). Be sure to mind your head as you make your way up the curved staircase to your room.

Upstairs, the 13 rooms are relatively spacious and are richly decorated with damask-covered walls, Murano lamps, and Venetian-style furnishings. All are equipped with air conditioning, a digital safe, cable TV, telephone, and minibar. Free Wi-Fi works throughout the hotel. Five rooms have jaw-dropping views of the square (ask ahead), and two have their own private terraces.

All rooms have their own private bathrooms that have recently been renovated and, once again, are pretty spacious for Venice. All are equipped with a shower and hairdryer.

Across the tiny street from the hotel, the Al Leon provides three more rooms and one studio in its annex. Rooms here are also quite nice, even more spacious, and have been decorated with less fanfare and flourish in order to accommodate guests with allergies (special pillows, no carpets, etc.). The only strings attached: Giuliano has installed his antique cello and bass in the hallway.

A continental breakfast is included in the room rate. Note that the Locanda Al Leon has rather steep stairs and, like most small hotels in Venice, no elevator.
