Located down a little alleyway well off Anastasiou Zinni in the relaxed 'hood of Koukaki, the one-star Marble House provides an exceptionally quiet budget bed. The hotel is sequestered at the base of the alley's cul-de-sac. In fact, we had some difficulty finding it.

Students and families are the most common guests here. The entryway, in coordination with the hotel's name, is marble and full of cute mosaics. The mirrored lounge area next to the reception is comfortable, though a bit dark even during daylight hours.

Various hues, from sky blue to buttery yellow, accent the walls and draperies in each of the 16 recently renovated rooms, adding color to the white linens and wrought-iron furnishings. We liked the mini-fridges and free Wi-Fi in every room.

Like most budget hotels in Athens, the Marble House bathrooms have no shower curtains. To compensate, some Marble House bathrooms do feature lovely retro shaded blue and white tiles. Downright plusses include the extremely quiet location, greenery outside alley-facing rooms, and a lovely patio/bar area. Oh, and the incredibly helpful staff.

Whle Marble House doesn't serve breakfast, there are plenty of eateries nearby. Note: the hotel does not have an elevator.

Koukaki & Makrygianni

Quiet Koukaki,to the south of Filopappou Hill, is a residential neighborhood of hillside avenues. Drakou, a leafy pedestrian street Drakou lined with eateries, Internet cafés and gelaterias, forms the neighborhood's core. The closest metro station is Syngrou-Fix.

Makriyianni, the adjacent neighborhood, is situated right at the foot of the Acropolis. It’s a more touristy area than Koukaki—with shops bulging with tschochkes and restaurants groaning with tourists—but the pedestrian street Dionysiou Areopagitou is pretty charming in places. Akropoli is the metro station closest to Makriyianni.
