Hotel Marta

The simple, friendly Hotel Marta is a two-star establishment in the heart of Old Town. The rates here are on higher end of the EuroCheapo spectrum, but we think the Marta is splurge-worthy for its prime location and social mission.

From the angular lobby to the uncluttered guestrooms, the theme at the Hotel Marta is minimal, frill-free and spotless. The boxy beds and minimalist lamps in the guestrooms smack of Ikea, and although we thought the dark gray linoleum floors were unfortunate, the pops of bright red-orange curtains and furnishings add life to the rooms. Each room is equipped with a fan, work desk and flat-screen television.

The private bathrooms are spacious by European budget hotel standards, and each is bright and done up with sparkling white tiles and glass-walled showers.

Make no mistake, the Hotel Marta is a basic budget establishment. You won’t find state-of-the-art stereos or quirky room service options here, but the super central location and moderate Zurich rates explain the hotel’s steady stream of guests.

Another plus: The Hotel Marta gives back to the community by reserving a set amount of positions for disadvantaged women.

A hearty breakfast is included in the rate and is served in handsome mid-century modern room. The hotel offers a complimentary Internet station and free high-speed Wi-Fi throughout.
