Located a few blocks west of the Hauptbahnhof, the family-owned two-star Hotel-Pension Adlerhof is a likeable four-story option with both traditional and modern rooms.

Some rooms have charming hand-painted canopy beds and Austrian folk furniture, while others are more modern and plain. All rooms, regardless of style, are aesthetically pleasing and have a satellite TV and telephone. Most have a private bath with shower.

Rooms facing the front have soundproof windows and views over Elisabethstrasse. Note that traffic is banned at night, which cuts down on noise. Back rooms face a dreary courtyard and offer less privacy. Triples and quads are available at quite reasonable rates, making the Adlerhof a prudent choice for families or small groups.

A standard Austrian breakfast (included in the rate) is served in an appealing breakfast room with booths, ornate molding and oil paintings on the walls.

If you don't mind the sex shops across the street, the neighborhood has its perks: Cheap Internet cafés abound, and self-caterers will love nearby Billa, a cheap supermarket chain. The reception is open all night, which is comforting since the area can be a bit spooky in the wee hours. And busy Saint-Julien-Strasse, lined with restaurants and shops, is two blocks away.

Location: Very central

1.4km to city center

Elisabeth-Vorstadt is convenient for those arriving by train. Most of the neighborhood's hotels are located within a few blocks of the station. While the Hauptbahnhof area—with its vulgar melange of lousy döner stands and places with names like CINEPLEXX—is an insult to everything beautiful about Salzburg, it is easily avoided.

Things look up a few blocks west. A couple of sex shops sit among the quiet apartment buildings, but there are also countless cheap Internet cafes, a few inexpensive Turkish supermarkets, and a 24-hour gas station stocked with food. Saint-Julien-Strasse, which runs through the neighborhood, feels like part of a much larger city.
