Located on the unbridled shopping frenzy that is Mariahilferstrasse, the family-owned Hotel Schani Salon projects an air of haughty calm.

Think of the Hotel Schani Salon as a mountain chalet, providing respite from the craziness outside the front door. Head past the hushed lobby, with its sprawling oriental rug, and you’ll find 21 uniformly decorated rooms of average-to-spacious size. Rooms offer a purple and white color scheme with modern furnishings, and many overlook a quiet courtyard.

A relatively recent renovation by the owners has added a slate of four-star amenities, including wireless Internet, cable television, and keycard entry. The gleaming bathrooms have acres of marble and porcelain tubs.

While rates aren't quite as austere as the décor, they are at the low-end for a hotel of this quality so close to the attractions of central Vienna.

Mariahilferstrasse is the Champs-Elysees or Fifth Avenue of Vienna. Southwest of the Innere Stadt, it's all about bright lights and shopping along this commercial street. The street is jammed with window shoppers, restaurants, and cafes.

Step off the beaten path and you'll find pleasant local spots—at least until you get to the four lane Gürtel, which provides an unpleasant border to the area. The Westbahnhof train station lies at the very southwestern edge of this district.
