Formerly the Hotel-Pension Berolina, the Happy Go Lucky Hotel + Hostel continues to offer comfortable budget beds with a great location directly across the street from the Charlottenburg S-Bahn station. True to its name, the Happy Go Lucky offers simple dorms and one-star privates, most with shared bathrooms.

Ideally equipped for student groups and penny-pinching independent travelers, the Happy Go Lucky packs a punch with its high value, professional service, and proximity to transportation links.

The Happy Go Lucky Hotel + Hostel offers private singles, doubles and triples, plus four-, six-, eight- and ten-bed dorms. All are spacious, bright and furnished with unfinished wooden beds, tables, chairs and metal lockers.

Some rooms in the self-proclaimed “artist-friendly” hotel have received an artistic treatment, but even if they have not, rooms feature touches of warmth, which may include colorful cubbies, potted plants, and the occasional poster. Views from the rooms leave a bit to be desired: Some rooms face the grim train tracks, while others overlook a spartan courtyard, where guests gather in summer (and smokers huddle in winter).

Most rooms at the Happy Go Lucky share bathrooms. The tiled facilities may evoke high school memories, but they are very clean. A hair dryer is available (but you’ll have to bring your own toiletries).

The Happy Go Lucky has an airy feel. Like the rooms, some of the common areas have received the artistic treatment (in the spirit, the hotel says, of Burning Man), and other areas will soon follow suit.

We liked the breakfast room, which faces the street and is open, cheery and has a bit of a farmhouse feel. There is also a TV lounge and (to drive home the hostel’s name, we suppose) an abundance of happy faces.

Breakfast is available for an additional charge. Wi-Fi is free in the public areas.

Location

The neighborhood surrounding the Happy Go Lucky is a-changing. You’ll find everything from sex shops to stores crammed with household supplies to ivy-covered restaurants (like those at the end of Stuttgarter Platz).

North of the Ku'Damm is the leafy, upper middle class hood of Charlottenburg. Residential and rich, Charlottenburg is full of relaxed little cafes. We love Charlottenburg for its friendly side streets, in particular those diagonal streets that host little mini-parks. We also like Charlottenburg's affordable little pensions and hotels, which are more prevalent than the neighborhood's well-heeled profile would suggest. While Charlottenburg is not as vibrant and exciting as the dynamic hoods to the east, it's reliable and safe, and at turns quite welcoming.
