Since 1925, this two-star hotel has ushered in guests attracted by its grandeur and Old World reputation. Today, it has a new look and fresh update as the Casual Madrid del Teatro. Thankfully, rooms are still cheap.

Casual Madrid del Teatro is located on Calle Echegaray, where tapas bars, restaurants, and cafés are a dime a dozen. Plaza Santa Ana and Plaza Sol are just a five-minute walk away.

Rooms are modern with flashy touches and a theater-centric theme.

Some rooms have balconies. While gilded mirrors brighten walls, matching antique curved-wood furniture darkens the feel of the rooms. Bathrooms have recently been remodeled, though the oversized tubs remain the same.

About three-fourths of the hotel rooms are exterior. For a higher fee, it's possible to book a suite. Suites are much bigger and have balconies overlooking a quiet street.

Huertas or Santa Ana? The neighborhood itself doesn't seem to know. But whatever its name, one thing's certain: This tiny but central stretch of the city just south of Puerta del Sol is jam-packed with people, attractions and excitement. Although digs in this popular 'hood can sometimes fall on the pricier end, there are deals to be had for travelers who crave a lively bar scene.

Also known as Barrio de las Letras (or "Neighborhood of the Letters"), it was a hot spot for literary gents of Madrid's Golden Age, and remnants of 16th- and 17th-century literary life still abound near Plaza Santa Ana. There's the Ateno, the Mueseo Cervantino, where the first edition of Don Quixote was printed, and myriad theaters and bars.
