Situated in the heart of Prati, the two-star Hotel Silla is staid in its décor yet warm in its welcome. The same friendly family has run the hotel for more than a decade—and they’re all self-confessed clean freaks.

While you may not be inspired by the Hotel Silla’s interior design, it’s a calming contrast after a day enjoying the opulent splendor of St. Peter’s Basilica. All of the 16 guest rooms have cream tiled floors, red and gold bedding, and simple wooden furniture. Classic art prints add a bit of subdued flair.

All rooms are equipped with a television, phone, wired Internet and a private bathroom. Note that there may be an additional charge for air conditioning.

There is a TV lounge just next to the reception, as well as a small breakfast room, where the morning buffet is served upon request (and for an additional fee).

The Hotel Silla is situated on a quiet side street, sandwiched between the shopping area of Via Cola di Rienzo and the Vatican Museums. The Metro is a five-minute walk away.

Tip: An added bonus is the popular pastry shop, Pasticceria Palmieri, on the ground floor.

Vatican & Prati

Located across the Tiber River, west of much of Rome, the Vatican and Prati are unquestionably majestic. St. Peter's Basilica is the focal point of the Vatican. It took 150 years to complete and is Europe's largest (and, arguably, most important) church. The Vatican is the world's only neighborhood that's also a nation. Set apart from the Rome of ancient ruins and trendy stores, the Vatican and Prati area is pleasant but not exactly what we'd call exciting. Tree-lined streets, wide boulevards, and newer buildings with ornate, manicured courtyards are the rule.

In addition to St. Peter's Basilica, Piazza Risorgimento and Piazza Cavour are top attractions. The area is two stops on the subway from Piazza di Spagna and within a five-minute bus ride of Trastevere, a picturesque hip neighborhood to the south. This is a great area to stay. Hotel rates are often lower, hotel rooms bigger, and nights quieter than in other central Rome neighborhoods.
