Ahh, Tempi Hotel. Proof yet again that good things come in surprising packages. From the street, this family-run hotel looks unassuming, even dumpy. Inside, however, clean rooms and friendly Yannis at the split-level reception make Tempi's bare-bones and super affordable rooms a great deal.

The Tempi's 24 rooms are small, they don't have telephones, and there's no breakfast offered beyond coffee or tea. But they're clean and tidy, and even stylish in a simple, gently retro manner. We liked the prim beds with brown blankets. Stand-alone wardrobes, tiled floors, and small balconies complete the picture.

Half of the Tempi's rooms have private bathrooms, and the other half share showers, sinks, and toilets. Guests also have use of a kitchen that doubles as a bar/lounge.

Rates are especially good given the location, just a hop from the Monastiraki metro station and a farther skip and jump to Plaka. In low season, rates drop a noticeable—dare we say astounding!?—25%.

Surrounding Monastiraki Square, the neighborhood of Monastiraki ranks next to Plaka as a top tourist neighborhood. It spans the gamut from high-end international retail chains on Ermou to the low-tech individual entrepreneurs selling their wares on Monastiraki Square. The neighborhood is home to Athens' last remaining mosque (from Turkish times), Hadrian's Library, the Roman Agora and Tower of the Winds.

Charming alleyways cut across Monastiraki, providing a nice escape from the steady tourist traffic. Some of the best gyro and souvlaki joints in all of Athens can be found here. The neighborhood is served by the eponymous Monastiraki metro station.
