Situated on a winding cobblestoned street, minutes from Santa Croce and the Duomo, the Sanctuary B&B Firenze offers a truly unique sleeping experience—and what might be the sweetest welcome of Florence, bar nun. This casa per ferie, or “vacation house,” is run by a group of welcoming and capable sisters.

Housed behind austere wooden doors in a labyrinthine building, the Sanctuary's rooms, which sleep one to five people, are spread out over many floors. The top floor houses apartments with heavenly views. Beds are available at a fixed, per person rate.

Each spotless and spartan room has some special feature, like large stained-glass windows or a heavy antique armoire. All are air conditioned, and have a free Wi-Fi connection, but otherwise low on amenities. A majority of rooms have private bathrooms. Shared bathrooms are located across the hall from most rooms. All are meticulously clean.

Comfortable common spaces are available throughout. We loved a fresco-adorned corner room with tall windows. But the best feature of the Sanctuary B&B is its enormous, well-tended garden. Even in winter it was a lush green with a few bright flowers (even so, a sister apologized for its “drab” appearance). With green spaces so scarce in Florence, we could see how one might make a habit of this terrestrial paradise.

The small chapel across from the breakfast room, with its wooden beam ceiling and impressive stained glass, is worth a visit even if you don’t stay for Mass.

Breakfast is included. Also note the 11:30 p.m. curfew.

Named for the Santa Croce basilica, which marks the center of this neighborhood, the south end of Santa Croce borders the Duomo neighborhood and swarms with tourists. The piazza itself is actually a popular spot for Florentines to meet, chat and then head elsewhere to eat. The parallel streets behind the church are relatively quiet, and slightly more residential.

Head northeast to Sant'Ambrogio, where Florence feels hipper, younger and much more real. Via dei Neri, a cross street on the other side of Via de'Benci, the southwestern border of the piazza, is lined with wine bars, specialty food shops and a few great osterias.

Choosing a hotel in Santa Croce can be a good fit for travelers looking to be fairly central, but also away from the tourist throngs.
