Tucked away in a quiet residential area north of San Lorenzo, the Residenza Johanna houses 10 meticulously decorated and splurge-worthy rooms.

When converting her grandparents’ former apartment into the B&B, proprietor Johanna Vitta made great use of the apartment’s original characteristics. Picture dark molding and exquisite wooden doors with glass panels. Rooms are furnished with classic canopies and antique armoires, most of which belonged to Johanna’s grandparents. Updated touches include silk window treatments and colorful floral quilts. Still lifes and sketches of Medici villas decorate the walls.

Each room is equipped with free Wi-Fi (there is also a laptop available to guests), a cute 1950s-style mini-fridge, and flat-screen TV. En suite bathrooms are small and bright. The residence also offers mini-suites with small sitting rooms and tempting bathtubs with rainfall shower heads.

The B&B is located about a 10-minute walk from the Duomo and center of town, in a rather ritzy area. Most of its neighbors are 19th-century palazzos (the Johanna I is directly across the courtyard from the Swedish embassy).

In addition to the included breakfast, complimentary tea, coffee and snacks are available throughout the day.

North of the Duomo, and home to the Accademia Gallery and David, parts of this area are flooded with tourists and tourist cuisine. As you head north, however, the streets widen out a bit, and there's a much more residential feel to the area.

Florence's university is also located nearby, which explains the few hipster-inspired bars, shops and restaurants dotting the 'hood. You're most likely to find peace and quiet in the northern part of San Marco.

Choosing a hotel in San Marco makes sense if you're looking for a quieter, more peaceful (and less touristy) sleeping experience. You might have to walk 10-15 minutes to get to the center of town, but you might find that the walk is worth it.
