The four-star Leonardo Hotel Dublin Christchurch (formerly a Jurys Inn, a chain owned by the same company) occupies a modern, flashy brick building with a big, light-filled reception area. As much as we favor small mom-and-pop hotels, there is often something comforting about the standardization of a chain hotel, and this Leonardo Hotel is no exception. Rooms are not always cheap, but it's worth a splurge for those looking for a reliable room.

The rooms at the Leonardo Hotel are kitted out in appealing wines and browns or blues and grays. (This is one chain that has gotten the message that restrained colors stand a better chance of remaining aesthetically bearable than do bright, flashy tones.) Rooms offer plenty of space, with wide desks, a decent sweep around the beds and neat cubby spaces for electric kettles and other coffee and tea paraphernalia. All are equipped with televisions, phones, free Wi-Fi and clean private bathrooms.

Located south of the Liffey, the area around Christ Church Cathedral—with its cobblestoned streets and imposing architecture—is a great home base for those wanting to sleep among history. The stunning cathedral dates back to the 11th century, although the present-day version reflects a number of changes over the years, including a late 19th-century "Victorianization." Its finely manicured grounds attract lounging locals and tourists alike.

The neighborhood also provides easy access to Dublin Castle, the "not-really-a-castle" castle from which the British ruled until 1922. And then, of course, there’s the Guinness Brewery (a house of worship to some), a little further west along the river.
