The three-star Equity Point Budapest (formerly Kings Hotel) is a charmer with a funky pop vibe and standard amenities. It’s situated in Elizabeth Town, in walking distance to both the Orthodox and Central Synagogues.

The streamlined lobby is a telling preview of the 79 rooms above. Each room has an LCD television, air conditioning, a mini-fridge and free Wi-Fi. Simple furnishings and bright colors give the space a minimalist 1980s aesthetic. All bathrooms are en suite.

The building is modern, the lobby bright, with orange and cream-colored vinyl chairs and a fresh vibe. That—along with some spotless white walls—had us feeling like part of a 1980s pop music video. Outside, the courtyards ("kerts") follow suit and are bright and well landscaped.

The hotel has 24-hour reception, and guests will soon be able to enjoy an on-site bar and restaurant. There is a bakery and a brunch spot nearby.

Erzsebetvaros

Before and during World War II, Erzsébetváros as a Jewish neighborhood. Now it's a cornucopia of late-20th-century architecture, its Byzantine-Moorish-style Great Synagogue (the second largest in the world) standing in gorgeous contrast the functional Communist-era structures that line its narrow streets.

By day, it's business as usual here, with local proletariat working away, Internet stations buzzing and restaurants serving up authentic grub. At day's end, the neighborhood redefines itself as a nightlife hub, home to the hip Liszt tér restaurant, a buzzing café culture and cool kert (courtyard) bars.
