Housed in a narrow 19th-century townhouse on a quiet side street, the one-star Les Ecrins is a simple and charming inn and just a 10-minute walk from the Grand Place.
A set of steep, tiny stairs leads to the 11 bright guest rooms upstairs, which are compact and cozy in a yellow-and-white color palette. All have crisp, clean linens, television, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi and telephones. Room types vary from small budget rooms to two-bedroom apartments with complete kitchens. All rooms have private bathrooms with clean new tiles, and some have bathtubs.
In the snug dining room, decorated with a “Tin Tin” motif, guests can enjoy a homemade breakfast for an additional charge, prepared by one of the owners (who, we should add, used to run a Belgian restaurant in California). Guests are also permitted to use the kitchen upon request.
The chatty, welcoming proprietors have been running the inn since 1997, and are always happy to offer friendly tips and steer guests away from tourist traps.

1.3km to city centerSainte Catherine, situated just a 10-minute walk northwest of the Grand Place, has come a long way from its days a medieval shipping port. The neighborhood’s street names still reflect the products—wood, bricks and the like—that were once sold here, but these days Scandinavian furniture is much more common tha firewood. This is a fast-changing neighborhood where you might see a rundown townhouse holding out against a wave of boutiques, galleries and restaurants.
Underneath the veneer of gentrification, the neighborhood’s original charm is undeniable. The medieval cathedral of Saint Catherine (patron saint of firefighters and guardian against sickness) is an imposing sight, and the alleys radiating from the church provide a delightful respite from the hectic tourist zone by the Grand Place.
