The basic and very affordable MacDonald Hotel is one of many old-fashioned accommodation options flanking pretty Argyle Square in London's King’s Cross neighborhood.

The cozy hotel isn’t the most charming or crisply designed hotel in London—or in the King’s Cross area, for that matter—but it will fit the bill for many. Its location is perfect for travel into and out of London, and the British Library is located a short stroll away.

The MacDonald Hotel's 30 simple rooms are clean, quiet and functional. Décor is simple, and there’s a mix-and-match color scheme at play: peach-colored walls, red or green patterned bed covers, blue carpets and floral curtains. All rooms are outfitted with TV, coffee/tea maker and fan.

The small bedside tables and wardrobes are of the Ikea variety. Framed reproductions of well-known paintings adorn the walls. Front-facing rooms look out onto the lush park.

Some rooms at the MacDonald Hotel have private bathrooms and others share facilities. Both shared and private bathrooms are simple and cramped but very clean. Rooms with shared bathrooms are equipped with a sink.

Hair dryers are provided but toiletries are not.

Wi-Fi is free throughout. Breakfast is currently not on offer at the hotel. Note that there is no elevator and the stairs are quite steep.

King's Cross

King’s Cross is an area in flux. While many Londoners will warn you to stay away from the streets around King’s Cross and St. Pancras stations, the area is in fact only seedy here and there.

There are oodles of small bed & breakfasts in the area, as well as upscale restaurants, and a real range of retail, from news agents, to shops peddling ethnic goods, to chain stores. King’s Cross benefits from proximity to Bloomsbury, and offers hotels that are, on average, quite a bit less expensive.
