The Marta Guest House is a sweet spot, for both its convenient location near the Vatican and its friendly, cozy vibe.

If you are looking for a touch of grandeur on a budget, the Marta Guest House is a great find. Sitting in the shadow of the Castel Sant’Angelo and the Vatican, this comfy pension offers homey accommodations at low rates.

The Marta Guest House has 15 rooms, each decorated in an individual style. Many rooms feature antique furnishings and quirky decorative touches. We spotted wrought-iron and brass bed frames along with deep red and shimmery gold fabrics. The lovely tiled floors are original, and each room has its own distinctive pattern.

All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, a TV, safe, minibar, mini-fridge and a coffee and tea facilities. The quietest rooms are those overlooking the internal courtyard (ask ahead). Note that rooms near the reception may be disturbed by other guests ringing the bell for admittance.

The private bathrooms are clean and modern. Most bathrooms have showers, but there are two bathtubs available (ask ahead).

The Marta Guest House sits on a side street just off of Piazza Cavour, a convenient location for visiting the Vatican and the historic center. Note: The Marta can be difficult to find, as it’s tucked away in a large building just off the street and the signage is not clear. Look for the address rather than the hotel’s sign.

Breakfast is included in the rate, and Wi-Fi is free throughout.

Located across the Tiber River, west of much of Rome, the Vatican and Prati are unquestionably majestic. St. Peter's Basilica is the focal point of the Vatican. It took 150 years to complete and is Europe's largest (and, arguably, most important) church. The Vatican is the world's only neighborhood that's also a nation. Set apart from the Rome of ancient ruins and trendy stores, the Vatican and Prati area is pleasant but not exactly what we'd call exciting. Tree-lined streets, wide boulevards, and newer buildings with ornate, manicured courtyards are the rule.

In addition to St. Peter's Basilica, Piazza Risorgimento and Piazza Cavour are top attractions. The area is two stops on the subway from Piazza di Spagna and within a five-minute bus ride of Trastevere, a picturesque hip neighborhood to the south. This is a great area to stay. Hotel rates are often lower, hotel rooms bigger, and nights quieter than in other central Rome neighborhoods.
