Cheap hotels near Medici Chapel in Florence, Italy
Located at the Basilica of San Lorenzo, the two Medici Chapels were built as extensions of the impressive church, and to honor the then ruling Medici family.
The sacristy and “Chapel of the Princes” date to the 16th and 17th centuries. The sacristy itself was designed by Michelangelo and it’s where at least two Medici brothers are buried in a mausoleum crypt downstairs. Hint: Make an appointment and you can view original sketches Michelangelo doodled in a special place beneath the apse at the sacristy.
The chapels are open daily from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed a few Mondays and Sundays each month. For more details visit the Medici Chapel Web site.
