Offering reasonable rates and a hip location off Andrassy út, the three-star Medos Hotel is good for guests willing to overlook garish design for the sake of a bargain.

Front rooms offer a view of the green Jókai tér. Furnishings in the 69 rooms aren't quite as picturesque. Standard beds sit atop worn parquet flooring. Chairs look like they were designed to occupy a hospital waiting room. But all rooms are clean and comfortable, with modern amenities including satellite television and free Wi-Fi. En suite bathroom walls are covered with bright tile, which looks as if it would be home in a 1960s color palette.

The tired aesthetic might not appeal to every taste. But with a location that allows guests to stumble home from nearby cafés or return from a night at the Opera House sans taxi, it seems silly to nitpick over the hallway's burnt-orange carpeting.

Surprisingly snazzy for a train station neighborhood, Terézváros lies just south of the Nyugati station, a glass showcase built by the Eiffel company. On the eastern end of the neighborhood is the large park, Városliget, as well as the neo-classical mansions house embassy headquarters, while.

Andrássy ut on the southern end is sometimes called "Fifth Avenue of Budapest" and home to the Opera House and the House of Terror Museum. And the neighborhood's west side offers easy access to St. Stephen's Basilica and the central Deák tér Metro station.
